GOUKAMMA NATURE RESERVE WALKING EXPERIENCE
GOUKAMMA NATURE RESERVE WALKING EXPERIENCE
This walking experience is aimed at those who enjoy walking in nature and have done some walking or hiking before.
The trails start at the car park of the Goukamma Cape Nature Reserve near Buffalo Bay which is about 5km from the Blackwaters River Lodge. We start the trail by crossing the Goukamma River on a 4-person dinghy that works on a rope-pulley system similar to a river pont. The trails actually begin on the western bank of the river.
Depending on the tides, the walking experience starts either with the coastal section which is approximately 4km in distance then go on the inland section of the trail through the milkwood forests and other indigenous trees and flora or vice versa. The trails end at the dinghy site, where one heads back over the river, to the car park.

The Goukamma Nature Reserve is 2500ha in size and includes a coastal section which is a Marine Protected Area and an inland section that has an extensive dune field with some of the highest vegetated dunes in South Africa.
The vegetation consists of coastal fynbos and coastal forest. The coastal dune forests consist of dense thickets of milkwood, yellowwood and candlewood trees. As one moves more inland, the fynbos vegetation becomes more prevalent and is characterized by erica and restio species, which flower in September and October.
The reserve is home to grysbok, bushbuck, bushpig, porcupine and vervet monkeys. Caracal (Rooikat) and the water and grey mongoose, the honey badger (ratel) and otters are also found but are not as common.
More than 220 species of birds have been recorded at the reserve including the African spoonbill, African fish eagle, African marsh harrier, Knysna turaco, 3 species of kingfisher, the African black oystercatcher and occasionally the endangered African penguin.
Offshore bottlenecked and hump backed dolphins can sometimes be seen frolicking in the waves. Between July and December, the Southern right whale is found close to the shore.
After the walking experience, one can return to Blackwaters River Lodge and have lunch at the Black Loerie Restaurant or at one of the other eateries along the Goukamma River.
